Jail transfer: Hyderabad jail officials on alert after receiving Karachi inmates
The prison has a three-layered security system in place, says jail superintendent.
HYDERABAD:
The security of Hyderabad Central Jail has been tightened after the recent transfer of target killers and members of banned outfits from Karachi prison.
At a press conference on Wednesday evening, jail superintendent Pir Shabbir Jan Sarhindi was confident that their security is foolproof. “Those who frighten people with rocket launchers and grenades can try but they won’t succeed,” he said. Prisons DIG Abdul Majeed Siddiqui, Rangers Commander Zakai and Headquarters SP Hyder Raza were also present.
According to Sarhindi, the prison has a three-layered security system in place with the help of the district police, Rangers and the Frontier Constabulary in addition to the prison police. The prison is currently housing dozens of suspected and convicted militants belonging to banned outfits.
Shujaat Hashmi, who has been accused of the target killings of around 100 people in Karachi, was recently transferred to Hyderabad. The jail population, said Sarhindi, has soared to 2,374 inmates - 50 per cent more than its capacity of 1,550.
“We are also simultaneously trying to repair all weak structures and build new ones in the prison,” told Headquarters SP Raza. Earlier, a rehearsal of a joint response to a potential attack was carried out by the law enforcers as well.
The prison has seen two security operations inside the jail in which eight inmates were killed while over a dozen, including jail wardens, were injured.
