LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Monday dismissed a petition against the termination of 70 contract workers at Aitchison College.

The petitioners said the college administration had laid them off without giving show cause notices. Their contract had not expired at the time. They said the government had ordered the administration to form a committee in 2009 to regularise the services of contract employees. The college administration had fired them, instead of constituting the committee. They requested the court to declare the termination illegal and issue directions for restoration of their services.

The college’s law officer appeared before court and said they had restored all employees, as directed by the court. He said the administration had not only paid their salaries but also provided additional benefits. The court asked whether the contract workers had been regularised.

The counsel answered that they had not been. The court said they could not issue an order for regularisation of the services.

The court directed the college’s board of governors to take a decision in this regard within 15 days and report it to the court.
