LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court issued notices on January 16 to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Wildlife Department regarding licences issued for hunting migratory birds in Pakistan.

The court asked for a reply by January 23. The petition had challenged 33 special permits issued to royals and senior officials from the Gulf to hunt the protected houbara bustard.

The court directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to submit a complete list of the foreigners who had been given licences for the 2013-14 hunting season. The court also directed the WWF and the IUCN to assist the court on January 23.

Eligibility criteria

The LHC issued notices last week to the Election Commission of Pakistan, the Federal Board of Revenue, the National Accountability Bureau, the Punjab Police IG and Federal Investigation Agency regarding the eligibility of candidates contesting local government elections. The petitioner, Munir Ahmed, had requested the court to summon the income tax, sales tax, agricultural tax, customs, professional tax, fake degree complaints and criminal records of the candidates. The returning officers had failed to obtain these details, the petitioner said.

Independent power producers

The LHC ordered the joint secretary of the Ministry of Water and Power and the managing director of Pakistan Electric Power Company last week to appear before court regarding a petition seeking the audit of payment to independent power producers (IPPs). The petitioner said the Supreme Court had ordered that gas be supplied for the production of electricity, but these directions had not been followed. He said the SC had also ordered an audit of Rs480 billion paid to the IPPs. He alleged that the government had paid this amount to IPPs that it favoured, although they were not producing the required amount of electricity.

Petition dismissed

The Lahore High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition stating that unnecessary media coverage had been given to former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s trial. The court asked Petitioner Feroze Shah Gilani to approach the Pakistan Electronic Media Authority (PEMRA).

Construction at Doongi Ground

The LHC issued a notice to LDA Director General Ahad Cheema, Former LDA chairman Noorul Amin Mengal, Former Lahore Division Commissioner Jawad Rafique and Punjab Entertainment Company Managing Director Mohiudin Wani to appear in court on February 20. This was in relation to a contempt of court petition, for the continuation of construction at Doongi Ground in Gulberg despite a restraining order by the court. The petition stated the officials were deliberately causing delay in the hearing of the case as they wanted to complete the construction. He requested the court to issue another restraining order to stop the construction. The judge said that if she found the concerned officials guilty of contempt, she would also order demolition.
