Pakistan railways: Plan to repair locomotives under way

Currently, 180 locomotives on average are operational while 285 are out of order, of which 200 are repairable.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways (PR) is pursuing a plan to repair 200 locomotives, aimed at making it an efficient and profitable organisation. Currently, 180 locomotives on average are operational while 285 are out of order, of which 200 are repairable. According to PR, 70 locomotives are being repaired against the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) project of 150 locomotives special repairs and will be completed within two years. The other locomotives are being rehabilitated through the PSDP under another project which will be completed by December 2015. A PR official said that procurement of 75 new locomotives is under process through the PSDP, whereas agreement for manufacturing five locomotives has been signed at the Pakistan Locomotive Factory in Risalpur. “Material kits for the locomotives will be supplied in May 2014 while manufacturing and assembling will be completed by December 2014,” he added.
