ISLAMABAD:

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has sent a summary to the Cabinet Division proposing to review its by-laws of 1960 to increase the amount of fine against sellers of unhygienic edible items.

Director Health Services CDA Hasan Orooj said that the authority has proposed amendments to its by-laws for enhancing the fines against violators and has submitted the summary for approval.  Orooj said that it has been proposed that fines on sellers of unhygienic food items should be enhanced up to Rs15,000.

Under the current CDA by-laws, fine against selling of unhygienic food items is Rs200 to Rs2000.

The director health services said that this paltry sum is needed to be enhanced to control the sale of substandard food items. He also said that two separate teams have been formed to keep a check on sale of substandard food at hotels, restaurants and shops in the federal capital.

He said that the civic agency was carrying out strict checking at hotels, shops, bakeries, meat shops, wholesale stores and cafeterias of schools, colleges and universities to ensure hygiene.

Dr Hassan said that 90 per cent premises of hotels and bakeries have been sealed partially for violation of food laws and 35 FIRs have been also lodged against the violators.
