LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Friday reserved verdict on a petition against acquisition of land by the government to set up a garment city in Sheikhupura.

Justice Ayesha A Malik reserved the verdict after hearing arguments of the petitioner and the respondent.

The petition was moved by Anjuman-i-Mutasareen Garments City Sheikhupura who said the government was taking over 1,475 acres for project.

They said the government had issued two notifications under Section 4 of Land Acquisition Act 1894. They claimed that the land was being acquired for private use by the Punjab Industrial Estates Management Company.

The petitioners said due process had not been adopted for the land acquisition as the government had not held any inquiry under Section 40 of the Land Acquisition Act 1894.

They asked the court to declare the notifications issued for acquisition of the land illegal.

The advocate general said the petitioners were not a registered organisation. He also said their petition was not maintainable.

He said that the government was acquiring the land after adopting the due legal procedure.
