NRO beneficiaries serving in FBR: PEW

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Thursday said 17 NRO beneficiaries are serving in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

The recipients of the benefit are either facing NAB cases or convicted under NAB ordinance 1999, it said. These officials range from Collector Customs to Inspector Customs. Three NRO beneficiaries have been retired after completing their tenure, said a press release.

FBR always blame taxpayers for shortfall in revenue but it has yet to put its own house in order, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President, PEW.

FBR has recently claimed that around 6,000 cases are pending in the courts that if decided could help the Apex tax collecting agency raise Rs100 billion. However, fact remains that many taxpayers invoke courts to save themselves from abuse of power which is a common complaint, he said.

Therefore, FBR should also share some blame, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal adding that PAC as well as the public deserve the whole truth.

The chief justice had been requested to constitute a special bench for the speedy disposal of tax cases but the authorities should also do something to stop abuse of power to minimise burden on superior courts, he said.

FBR chairman on Tuesday told PAC that the government is losing around Rs500 billion a year in taxes which is a matter of great concern. It can be resolved through tax reforms in reforms in the FBR, he said. He said that government departments are responsible to burden judiciary and delayed justice.
