Violence stalks city again in shadow of operation

KARACHI:
A senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) worker was among six people shot dead in the city on Sunday.
The deceased PTI worker was identified as Qari Jafer. The incident took place in SITE when Jafer was on his rickshaw to pick up his children up from a seminary. Police officials said that at least two armed men on a motorcycle killed him. He was shot twice and died soon afterwards. SHO Sohail Khan said that the incident was a target killing but they have yet to ascertain the motive behind the incident. Khan added that police have recovered empty shells from the crime scene, which will be sent to the Sindh Police Forensic Division.
PTI leaders said the deceased lived in the Haroonabad area of SITE and was contesting for the general councilor position in the upcoming local bodies’ elections. “Despite the ongoing operations, no one is safe in the city,” said PTI leader Dawa Khan Sabir. “Jafer was a senior worker. His killers should be arrested and punished immediately.”
Separately, 65-year-old Ameer Buksh and 60-year-old Shafi Muhammad were shot dead while 65-year-old Ali Muhammad alias Abdul Sattar Khaskheli was wounded in a firing incident in Mawach Goth. According to Mochko SHO Khan Nawaz, the firing took place during a nikkah ceremony when an argument broke out and some people opened fire that resulted in the two deaths.
A man, identified as Muhammad Iqbal, was also shot dead in Qasba Colony. Orangi Town SHO Saleem Shaikh said the deceased was the owner of a factory.
Meanwhile, a man identified as 50-year-old Nazar Shaikh was shot dead while another was injured in a firing incident in Surjani Town. Shaikh was said to be affiliated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional.
A prayer-leader of Masjid-e-Khizarul Islam in Baldia Town’s Saeedabad, Qari Liaquat, was shot dead on Sunday evening. SP Malik Muhammad Ehsan said that the suspect first offered prayers behind Liaquat, then shot him multiple times and fled.
Raids and arrests
The Rangers claimed to have arrested 15 alleged criminals during targeted raids in various parts of the metropolis. According to a Rangers’ spokesperson, 15 hardened criminals, including a full chain of target killers affiliated with a political party, notorious gangster Noora and extortionist Ghaus, were arrested.
