Crackdown: 108 major gas theft cases unearthed

Gas pilferage costing Rs34 million was discovered at a hotel

FAISALABAD: “The district government and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) found 108 serious gas pilferage cases over the last year,” Muhammad Amjad, a spokesman of the city government said on Thursday.

He said eight of these cases were found from textile mills. The theft amounted to Rs530 million. He said two cases involving Rs50 million theft each were unearthed at CNG stations. He said gas theft was also detected at glass and chalk factories. He said gas pilferage costing Rs34 million was discovered at a hotel and a theft case worth Rs6.6 million was detected from a sweet factory. He said 52 minor gas theft cases were detected from industrial units and 156 gas theft cases were unearthed from residences of domestic consumers. He said an SNGPL gas distribution officer Rashid Hameed was arrested by Jhang Bazaar police station for helping gas thieves.
