Abbas wins cycling 1,000m event
Lahore dominates Punjab Games with three more gold medals.
KARACHI:
Faisalabad’s Ahsan Abbas claimed the men’s 1,000-metre individual time trial cycling event at the Punjab Games on Saturday.
Abbas emerged as the best cyclists among 38 other riders. He covered the distance in a minute and 18 seconds, while Lahore’s Muhammad Zahid secured second position with a difference of three seconds.
Meanwhile, Gujranwala’s Hafiz Muhammad Tariq bagged the bronze medal in the velodrome event.
“It was a good competition, especially when cyclists from cities besides Lahore perform well here,” a Punjab Cycling Association official told The Express Tribune. “It is encouraging as we have seen many new riders coming up in these provincial games.”
Meanwhile, Lahore dominated the 4,000m team pursuit event. They took the title in five minutes and 46.40 seconds.
They out-peddled Gujranwala, who finished the race in five minutes and 49.13 seconds, while Faisalabad secured third place in five minutes and 50 seconds. The cycling event featured seven teams.
Two more cycling events will take place on Sunday at the Lahore velodrome.
In other events, Lahore won the women weightlifting championship with 67 points, Gujranwala bagged the silver medal with 50 points and Rawalpindi secured third place with 37 points.
Lahore also won the tug-of-war competition. They defeated Rahim Yar Khan, who took silver medal, while Sargodha secured bronze medal in the event.
