LAHORE:
Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-i-Azam (PML-Q) president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Wednesday said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should convene an all parties conference (APC) to frame the national economic agenda.
Addressing a function organised by the party to mark the 137th birthday of Quaid-i-Azam, he said former president Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chief Imran Khan and leaders of other parties all contribute at the APC for the country’s progress.
He said terrorism could not be eliminated through protests alone. “We all have to sit together… the teachings of Quaid-i-Azam tell us that we should put our personal interests aside, come up with a national agenda and unite to achieve its goals.” “If an APC can be organised against terrorism then why can’t there be one for economic development and planning?” he said.
The PML-Q leader said the government should launch a campaign to promote cultivation of vegetables to cut down imports. “It [the government] should distribute free fertilisers and seeds among growers,” he said.
He said the PML-Q had worked for the prosperity of the people and development of the province. “All that has now been destroyed… Crime has significantly increased in the Punjab,” he said.
He said relations between Pakistan and Turkey should be strengthened. “The chief minister should have taken the Turkish prime minister to a Danish School instead of Aitcheson College, established by the British,” he said.
Former deputy prime minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi said the present government should compare its performance to that of PML-Q.
“We are the real heirs to the Quaid… we undertook revolutionary and historical projects in the Punjab to realise Quaid’s dream of an Islamic welfare state,” he said.
-Q leaders Basharat Raja and Chaudhry Zaheerud Din also spoke on the occasion.
