KARACHI: An Anti-Terrorism Court dismissed on Tuesday the bail plea of a man in a case pertaining to extortion. The ATC-III dismissed the bail application of a suspect, Waqar Ahmed, after he was produced before the court.

According to the prosecution, Ahmed had allegedly threatened Aslam Khan and his wife over the phone to pay extortion money or their son would be kidnapped. The prosecution further said that Ahmed, under the alias of Pappu, had made several phone calls to the family and kept demanding money, adding that he had warned of dire consequences in case of failure.

Following his threats, Khan had registered a complaint with the Clifton Police who had managed to arrest the suspect. A case, No.184/13, 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion) read with section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997, was registered at the Clifton police station.

On Tuesday, the court dismissed the bail application and remanded him back to police custody.

The same court dismissed the bail application of another suspect, Shahbaz Hussain Khan, in a separate extortion case.

According to the prosecution, Khan had demanded Rs2 million from a trader, Furqan, on September 13, 2013. The complainant had registered a case, No.532/13, under sections 386, 387 read with section 7 of the ATA, at the Ferozabad police station.

The police caught the suspect red-handed after he was asked to come and collect the money on September 28.

On the other hand, judicial magistrates of all four districts, performing special duties on the courts’ holiday, sat at the ATC premises as routes leading to the City Courts were closed due to the Chelum processions. The judges remanded 10 suspects to police custody after they were produced before them, said court sources.
