Former president Leghari is no more
Leghari had been under treatment for heart problems.
Former president of Pakistan Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari passed away on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday at a Rawalpindi hospital. He was 70.
Leghari had been under treatment at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology for quite some time for heart problems. A key actor on Pakistan’s political landscape, Leghari had withdrawn from active politics for some years.
Born on May 29, 1940, Leghari remained Pakistan’s president from November 14, 1993 to December 2, 1997 – the tenure in which he fell out with his mentor Pakistan Peoples Party and sent his former boss (Benazir Bhutto)’s government packing.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan’s website, he was born in Choti Zareen, a village of Dera Ghazi Khan district.
He came from a political family that has been active in politics in this part of the world since the pre-colonial days. His father Sardar Muhammad Khan Leghari and grandfather Nawab Sir Muhmammad Jamal Khan Leghari had both been ministers.
He had his early schooling at Aitchison College, Lahore and graduated from the Forman Christian College, Lahore.
