Pak-India relations: DGMOs hold face-to-face talks
The Indian and Pakistani DGMOs hope to ensure a ceasefire at LoC.
ISLAMABAD:
The first, long-awaited meeting between the Director General Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan and India was held on Tuesday (today) at the Wagah border to devise a plan to prevent ceasefire violations at the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir, Express News reported.
DGMO Major General Amir Riaz had invited his Indian counterpart Lieutenant General Vinod Bhatia for a meeting today to “strengthen the mechanisms to ensure ceasefire on the LoC,” read a statement issued by the foreign ministry on December 17.
This was the first time that DGMOs from the two nuclear-armed neighbours held face-to-face talks. The meeting lasted for around two hours.
One brigadier from each side and three lieutenant colonels were also present at the meeting.
“The meeting is taking place in a good atmosphere,” said the Director General of Inter Services Public Relations (DG-ISPR).
Decision for the meeting of DGMOs to take place was taken on a political level, he further added.
Earlier, both countries had agreed to arrange a meeting of their DGMOs after talks between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York in September.
