ISLAMABAD:
Minister In Charge of Cabinet Secretariat Mohammad Sami Saeed has told the National Assembly of a plan devised by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to install four effluent treatment plants at a cost of Rs8 billion in Karachi. In a written response to a question from Aamir Ali Khan Magsi, he said the KWSB has got approval of the project PC-1. The industrial waste of the country is being disposed of in the rivers. However, it has been informed that the subject of environmental pollution and ecology has been devolved to provinces after the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and now the provinces and their respective departments are responsible to implement environmental laws. A water quality monitoring system has been established in five cities that include Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Lahore and Quetta. Among the four treatment plants, two will be in SITE area, the third one in Korangi/Landhi and the fourth in Federal B Area/North Karachi. Of the total cost, Rs500 million has already been allocated for two plants.
