Lt Gen Hayat will replace Lt General (Retd) Khalid Ahmed Kidwai as the head of SPD.
The SPD administers National Command Authority policies over all of Pakistan’s nuclear and missile programs. The SPD exercises significant administrative authority over the research, development, production, and manufacturing of Pakistan’s ballistic and cruise missile arsenal.
Among its duties, the SPD trains and maintains a dedicated force that provides security to Pakistan’s nuclear programmes and assets.
Earlier this year, Lt Gen Kidwai also saw the induction of the first indigenous fleet of surveillance drones.

@fawad:
The way civilians handled democratic govt lást 5 years and today.....is this not enough ?
@Fawad..Civilians cant handle a government or even change one and u want them to have control over nuclear arsenal ?
@fawad: What do civilians know about how nuclear missiles in the possession of military units need to be deployed? Lets not go overboard with this "lets give complete control to the civilians mantra" please. The military has some very experienced people who know how to employ these weapons. The civilian government is fully involved in giving the go, no-go on the decisions to employ. But it has to be a military man who heads the planning division because all the employment of the nuclear weapons will be done by the military.
General Kidwai has done an exceptionally good job getting SPD off the ground. He has been a thorough professional and his services to Pakistan should be lauded. Thank you General sahib for a job well done!
civilians CANNOT be trusted with this sensitive area.
