Endurance test leaves one dead, several faint

A candidate, appearing in a physical test for Police recruitment, died of heart failure in Faisalabad.

A candidate for the post of constable in Faisalabad police died on Monday after finishing sixth in a contest to complete 1.5 kilometres distance in seven minutes.

Similar ‘physical endurance tests’ were conducted in Multan, Rahim Yak Khan and Bahawalnagar regions for recruitment of male and female police constables. Several candidates were reported to fall unconscious during the race.

Hafeez Ullah, a Jarawalla resident, fell on the ground as soon as he crossed the finish line at the FDA City located on Sargodha Road.
There was no first-aid facility at the spot and Rescue 1122 was called in after sometime to shift Hafeez Ullah to the hospital but he died on the way.

Talking to Express News, his father said that he was preparing for the race for many days. He said he was very hopeful about clearing the test.

“He left the house at 4:00am. What’s the use of such a job that does not spare your life?” his father asked.

Shaukat Abbas, the Faisalabad senior superintendent of police (Operations), said that physical test was a mandatory requirement for recruitments in the police department. He said he was sad at the news of Hafeez Ullah’s death.

Other candidates told The Express Tribune that the test was scheduled to begin at 8:00am but it started at 12:00pm.


The Faisalabad police department had received more than 45,000 applications for the 350 slots. Written tests of the candidates clearing the ‘physical endurance test’ will be held on October 23.

Bahawalnagar:

Three candidates – Abdul Ghafoor, Mohammad Naeem and Mohammad Hassan – running fell unconscious in Bahawalnagar.

They were shifted to the district headquarters (DHQ) hospital where they were provided with medical aid.

More than 5,000 applications were received by the Police Department for 150 seats of constables in Bahawalnagar.

Seven arrested forimpersonating applicants:

Seven people were arrested in Multan for taking the test in place of the applicants. Multan Police SSP (Operations) Malik Mohammad Yousaf said that they had committed a crime and would be dealt with in accordance with the rules. He assured that all appointments would be made on merit.

They included Bilal, Imran, Asad, Iqbal, Murtaza, Fayaz and Mazhar.
