KARACHI:
Provincial Minister for Information and Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon announced on Friday that local bodies’ elections in Sindh would be conducted on January 18, 2013 on party basis, recanting the previous government position of holding the polls in March.

In compliance with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decision, the government decided to hold local government elections in January, said Memon.

The provincial government had wanted to hold LB polls in March due to certain reasons, but ECP insisted on holding the polls in January said the minister. He added that the government was ready for it.

The Sindh government would make sure that elections are held in a transparent manner. However, Memon said preparation of correct voters’ list and provision of magnetic ink is the responsibility of ECP.

Memon hoped that ECP would fulfil its responsibilities regarding polls.

He added that party-based LBs elections are being held for the first time in history and the government would ensure that whole process is conducted in a good manner.
