FAISALABAD:

District Coordination Officer Noorul Amin Mengal on Thursday directed the assistant commissioners to launch a campaign against unauthorised sugarcane weigh-bridges in the district.

The order followed complaints from sugarcane growers.

The DCO was presiding over a joint meeting of representatives of the sugarcane growers and sugar mill owners to review problems on both sides.

The DCO told assistant commissioners to act against unauthorised weigh-bridges and file cases against their owners. He said that equipment at such installations should be confiscated.

The DCO assured the sugarcane growers that their rights would be protected and that unwarranted deductions in weight and price of sugarcane would not be tolerated.

He directed the agriculture executive district officer to assess the quality of sugarcane brought to mills. He asked the management of the sugar mills to display their banners at authorised weigh-bridges.

He also stressed the need for fixing reflectors on tractor-trolleys used to transport sugarcane to avoid accidents.

The DCO constituted tehsil-level enforcement committees to settle farmers’ and mill owners’ issues during the sugarcane crushing season. He asked the committees for daily reports.

The committees would be supervised by ACs and include the agriculture DDOs, the DSPs and representatives of the market committees, growers and sugar mills.
