RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested 10 members of a car-lifting gang and recovered five cars, 20 motorcycles, weapons and alcohol from their possession.

According to the police, the gang was involved in carjacking in the twin cities.

Speaking at news conference, City Police Officer (CPO) Umer Akhtar Lalika said that car-snatching and narcotics were some of the main challenges the police were facing to overcome and eradicate in the city.

“The police have chalked out a comprehensive plan to root out car-lifters and drug dens from the city,” he said.

The CPO claimed that car-theft incidents in the city have reduced up to 50 per cent, as according to him, the back of the gang members has been broken. “Further efforts are underway to arrest other members of the gang, who are hiding in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and its adjoining areas.”

While talking about the alleged gang members, he said that the arrested suspects were operating in the jurisdictions of the Sadiqabad, Pirwadai, New Town, Cantonment, Race Course, and Airport police stations and also in Islamabad.

The police also recovered 520 litres of moonshine, 110 bottles of liquor and 1.22 kg of hashish from their possession. He said that in the next phase, CCTV cameras would also be installed at 24 places within the city to keep check on such activities.

Potohar Division SP Haroon Joya, Anti-Car Lifting Cell Head ASP Zeeshan Haider, Cannt Circle ASP Capt (retd) Bilal Iftikhar and other officials were also present.
