The federal government is considering selling wheat directly to flour millers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), as despite the shortage of the commodity the provincial government is reluctant to pick its wheat stocks lying with the national grain storage agency, said Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.
The matter of increasing wheat prices came under discussion during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet that met at the Prime Minister’s office. During the last few months, the prices of wheat increased from Rs37 per kilogramme to Rs50 per kg. There were apprehensions about a further increase in prices.
Dar said the ECC has directed the federal food minister to take up the matter with Provincial Chief Minister Pervez Khattak. He said if the K-P government did not lift its wheat quota; the commodity will be directly sold to flour mills in the province.
