FAISALABAD:

Hundreds of residents of Chak 188, Nallay Wala on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration against police accusing them of beating up a man when he went to report a robbery. The protestors blocked the Chak Jhumra Road and demanded immediate action against the policemen who had arrested Nazeer Sindhu instead of the robbers.

Anwar, the lumberdar, told the media that some unidentified men had broken into Ilyas Ghumman’s shop and taken away Rs25,000.

He said the robbers hid in a sugarcane field. The police were called but did not arrest them. “Instead Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Rasheed arrested Nazeer Ahmad beat him up,” he said.

The protestors demanded that the regional police officer (RPO) and the city police officer (CPO) take notice of the matter.

They said departmental action should be taken against ASI Rasheed and he should be suspended from service.

The protest ended when Chak Jhumra Station House Officer Mazharul Haq met the protestors and assured them that the policemen involved in illegal arrest would be dealt with in accordance with law.
