Worship places: Saint Mary’s Cathedral reopens after renovation

Rs5m had been collected for the purpose by the cantt board, civil society.

The 165 years old Saint Mary’s Cathedral in cantonment was opened for worshipers on Monday evening after it had remained closed for a week for renovation. The church had been undergoing renovation for three months.


The reopening ceremony was performed by Multan Corps Commander Lt Gen Abid Pervez.

Gen Pervez said Rs5 million had been collected for the purpose by the cantonment board, the civil society and philanthropists. He said the renovation work was monitored by Station Commander Brig Taufeeq Tahir.



Bishop Leo Paul Roderick thanked the Pakistan Army and the civil society for their cooperation. He said such mutual cooperation was crucial for inter religious harmony.

He asked the corps commander to direct the cantonment board to remove encroachments from the road in front of the church area. He also asked for a school for the Christian community near the church.

Nishtar Medical College and Hospital Chairman Jalaluddin Rumi and Multan Electric Power Company CEO Abdul Mateen Khan were also present.
