Lust for land: Man, father accused of killing wife

He wanted her to give him her property.

A woman was killed allegedly by her husband on Sunday over her property, police said. They said his father and another relative who helped him have been missing since the incident.


An FIR has been registered at the Manthar police station with the woman’s father as complainant.

Habib Khan, a resident of Chak Naseerabad near Rahim Yar Khan, told police that his daughter Jamali Mai had married Nadir Khan a few years ago. He said she had received four-kanals agricultural land from his property.

He said her husband had been asking her to gift the land to him, but she had refused to do so.

He said on Saturday night, Khan, his father Muhammad Salman and their relative Imam Bakhsh tied a rope around his daughter’s neck while she was asleep and strangled her. They fled after killing her.

He said a neighbour on his way for Fajr prayers saw the three men leave the house in a suspicious manner and went inside after the men left and saw Jamali Mai lying dead in her room.

The police were informed and contacted her parents. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination.

Police said they were looking for the suspects.

Woman attacked for ‘turning down proposal’


Separately, a man cut a woman’s lips and slashed her wrists after she turned down his marriage proposal.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where doctors treating her said that she was in critical condition.

Police said Bilal Shafiq of Basti Mian Sahab near Sadiqabad broke into the house of Raheela Bibi*, whom he had proposed for marriage a few weeks ago. She she had turned him down.

They said he cut her lips and made cuts on both her wrists. They said Raheela Bibi’s mother who rushed to the room on hearing her shouts for help tried to stop Shafiq and was also attacked.

The women were taken to a hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, where doctors treating Raheela Bibi said she was in critical condition.

They said the mother had injuries on the chest and shoulders but would likely survive.

An FIR was registered on the complaint of Raheela Bibi’s brother-in-law, Muhammad Qasim*.

He said Shafiq had tried a few days ago to kidnap Raheela. He had fled when she attracted some passers-by with her shouts.

He said her family had filed a complaint with the police, who had arrested Shafiq, but had later freed him after he bribed them. He said the police had told them that there wasn’t enough evidence against Shafiq.

An FIR was registered with Sadiqabad police after Sunday’s assault. Police said they were looking for the suspect.
