KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued bailable warrants for the arrest of a public relations officer of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical College, Lyari, for failing to appear in court and submitting that he did not commit fraud worth Rs240,000.

A division bench, headed by Justice Nadeem Akhtar, was unhappy that the officer defied court orders numerous times and failed to appear. It issued warrants for him for Rs25,000.

The two-member bench was hearing the petition filed by student Shahnila Jawaid, who took the college principal and others to the court for not enrolling her in the MBBS programme. Jawaid had claimed that she applied for the MBBS programme and appeared for the entry test but she failed. She then applied for a self-finance seat in the same programme.

On December 4, 2012, an official of the college called Jawaid told her that her application for the self-finance seat had been accepted and that she had to submit her original academic certificate along with a pay order of Rs240,000, the petitioner claimed.

After completing all requirements, she went to the college to attend classes but was informed that she was not enrolled. Her lawyer said that she approached the principal to resolve her issue but he failed to take any action.

She requested the court direct the college authorities to allow her to attend classes and enrol her at the college. Earlier, the court had directed the registrar and public relations officer to appear in the court and submit their replies.

The registrar told the court she had failed to submit her documents or the pay order.
