KARACHI:

Defending Champions Young Rising Star WFC and Balochistan United WFC booked their spots in the final of the National Women Football Championship 2013 in Lahore on Saturday.

Young Rising Star WFC defeated Islamabad 3-0 in their last-four encounter at the Punjab Stadium.

The victors’ club manager Shahid Ahmed Khan said that this will be the first time for any club in Pakistan to win the championship for a fifth successive time.

Young Rising Star WFC’s Zara Iqbal scored the opener in the second minute of the match, while Nazia Bhatti doubled the lead in the 41st. Iaza Muhammad then went on to seal the victory in the 49th minute.

“Hopefully we’ll make a new record,” Khan told The Express Tribune. “Our club has been producing national level footballers since 2007.”

He said the final will witness good quality football against Balochistan United WFC on Sunday.

Balochistan United FC also proved their worth against Army, winning 3-2 in the second semi-final of the day. It is the first women’s club of the country, and founder Rubina Irfan said her team has put in hard work to reach the final.

“It’s a team sport and whichever side plays with unity will win,” said Rubina. “Getting women footballers from Balochistan has never been easy. This time, I had to take girls from Quetta, Sibbi, Awaran, Kalat and brought them all to different places to Karachi so that they could practice for the championship.

“We need the government’s support to progress.”
