More degrees, less pay: The decreasing value of a bureaucrat

'Education is the art of making man ethical,' they say, but not rich – especially in the Pakistani bureaucracy.

Job advertisement shows education does not guarantee a good pay.

ISLAMABAD:

“Education is the art of making man ethical,” they say, but not rich – especially in the Pakistani bureaucracy. A recent job advertisement for a Public Sector Development project showed that education, a post-graduate degree specifically, does not guarantee a good pay scale.

The vacancy announcement advertised the post of a research officer with a minimum qualification of a Master’s or Master of Philosophy (MPhil), who is offered Rs20,000 a month. However, another vacancy ad for National Electronic Power Regulatory Authority, posted right above it, offered Rs22,000 per month for a driver, requiring matriculation as the minimum level of education.
