Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister (CM) Pervez Khattak has approved a comprehensive scheme for waste and garbage collection, disposal, and reprocessing in Peshawar.

Initially, the services of international firms will be hired for launching the scheme and training personnel, but none of the existing staff of the Municipal Corporation (MC) will be rendered jobless, said an official statement released on Friday.

The CM has directed four sites on each corner of the city be identified and acquired, where waste will not only be collected, but reprocessed and converted into energy. While acquiring such sites, not only present but future requirements will have to be kept in view, said the CM, according to the handout. The project is expected to avoid current traffic blockages due to the transportation of waste, and also minimise carriage costs.

It has been decided the MC staff will continue to be used for the purpose, and in case an external firm is hired, they would also utilise the services of the same workers.

In this regard, a meeting was held in Pakhtunkhwa House, Islamabad on Thursday by Pervez Khattak, which was attended by many of the relevant officials and ministers. The provincial government has already taken up the matter with the Cantonment Board, which has assured full support for the scheme. On the occasion, a delegation from Turkish firm OzPak J.V, hired for their services in Lahore, was also present. They put forward a number of suggestions and offered their services for Peshawar as well. The programme is expected to be launched in January.
