Crime round-up: TTP member killed in an encounter

KARACHI:
An alleged member of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was killed in an encounter with the police on Wednesday near the Musharraf Morr in Mauripur.

Police personnel conducting routine snap checking tried to intercept the three suspects riding a motorcycle who opened fire while trying to escape, according to SHO Shafiq Tanoli. Two policemen, Ejaz and Aqeel, were wounded. The police also opened retaliatory fire and killed one suspect. Two of his companions, however, managed to escape.

SHO Tanoli claimed that the deceased was a member of the outlawed TTP, adding that a Kalashnikov and two pistols were found in his possession. The suspects are reportedly involved in more than 50 cases of target killings, including attacks on 30 policemen.

Lyari protest

Residents of Lyari staged a protest on Wednesday against the killings of alleged gangsters in encounters with the law enforcers in Lyari. At least five alleged gangsters were killed during separate encounters with the Rangers and police late Tuesday night.


They chanted slogans in favour of Uzair Baloch and against Baba Ladla’s gang, claiming that the law enforcement agencies were conducting a one-sided operation in Lyari.

Arrests

The Special Investigation Unit claimed to have busted a gang of bank robbers in Karachi and arrested four robbers, including their ring leader, from SITE Industrial Area. According to SIU Chief SP Farooq Awan, the alleged robbers were involved in at least seven bank robberies in different locations.

At least five workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement were also taken into custody during a targeted raid conducted by the Rangers. The apprehended MQM workers, Faisal Qureshi, Rehan Qureshi, Zahid Chand, Athar Shaikh and Aqeel Ansari, were apprehended during a raid at MQM Unit 142 in New Karachi area.
