KARACHI:

All four Pakistan cueists, including defending world champion Mohammad Asif, continued their unbeaten run in the IBSF World Championship being held in Daugavpils, Latvia.

Shahid Aftab became the second Pakistani player to hit a century in the ongoing event after Mohammad Sajjad and defeated Singapore’s Shu Seng Chua 4-1 in the process.

Aftab enjoyed a good start in the match as he hit a 79-point break in the first frame that helped him settle down. He then went the extra mile by chalking up a 105-point break in the second.

Chua managed to stop his run by winning the following game. However, Aftab proved himself the better player, winning 80-49(79), 105-0(105), 55-64, 72-04 and 91-23.

Meanwhile, Imran Shehzad secured an emphatic straight-frames victory against Lithuania’s Vilius Schulte with a scoreline of 110-0(61), 78-10(73), 90-29 and 53-18.

In another match, Asif eased past home player Peteris Ermansons 4-1 as he stretched his unbeaten run to 12 matches in the World Championship, including the results of the previous edition of the mega event.

The reigning champion sailed through the first two frames before conceding the third. However, his dominant form returned as he triumphed 67-13, 83-02, 46-50, 105-14(66) and 87-32.

Elsewhere, Mohammad Sajjad – partner of Asif in the victorious World Team Championship – also won with a similar scoreline.
