Only source of income: Farmers protest construction of housing scheme on arable land
One of the farmers, Arbab Khan, continued a hunger strike for the seventh day.
PESHAWAR:
Farmers of Mughalki village and adjacent areas in Nowshera protested against the government’s decision to build the Mega City Housing Scheme on their land on Friday. They blamed the leadership for attempting to snatch away their only source of income.
Protesting outside the Peshawar Press Club, farmers from Union Council Mughalki, Misri Bandha, Mishak, Ali Mohammad, Mian Esakhel, Nandrak, Muazam Kallay, Och Khwar and Marhati Bandha appealed to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government to not use their fertile land for development projects.
Inayatullah, an elder of the Farmers’ Action Committee said most of the villagers are farmers whose family income depends on agriculture. “Many people in Nowshera would happily sell their land for such projects but the K-P government wants to take away our fertile land,” protested Inayatullah.
One of the farmers, Arbab Khan, continued a hunger strike for the seventh day.
Haji Tahir Khan, another protester, said opposition parties have assured them of support and warned if the farmers’ demands were not met, they would block the motorway in protest.
