National Nutrition Survey: Nearly 60% of mothers ‘illiterate’
Only 10.5 per cent of mothers have completed their 10 years of schooling.

Female literacy in Pakistan has been a challenge for many decades and the proportion of illiterate mothers is 59.3 per cent in the country, said the latest National Nutrition Survey. The survey issued by the Planning and Development Division of Planning Commission of Pakistan said the proportion was almost double in rural areas than in urban areas. “Some 36 per cent urban and 69.4 per cent rural mothers are illiterate,” the survey said. It said 45.7 per cent of the household heads were illiterate and the proportion of illiterate heads of household was lowest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, which is only 27.3 per cent, whereas the proportion was highest in Balochistan with 58.2 percent. Only 10.5 per cent of mothers have completed their 10 years of schooling, the survey said adding, 9 per cent managed to complete their studies beyond grade 10. Moreover, 10.9 per cent of mothers from rural areas received education till grade 9 and above while in urban areas 38.8 per cent achieved the same, according to the survey.
