Student conveyance: BZU plies five buses on new routes
The university has 40 buses that are used by over 20,000 students.
MULTAN:
Bahauddin Zakariya University will now ply five buses on four new routes, APP reported on Monday. These buses are among the 40 university buses that are used by over 20,000 students.
Students had been complaining about the shortage of university buses saying there should be more buses to facilitate students on longer routes. They said the number of students using university buses was increasing, and so it created problems as buses remained jam-packed every time. Students had to hang to its doors and rear grill and sit on the roof lest miss the bus.
BZU transport officer Zahid Iqbal said that five buses had recently been started on the Mumtazabad, Shah Rukne Alam, Waliatabad and Masoom Shah Road routes. He said routes had been added on the directions of the chief minister after a recent incident where a BS first semester student died after falling from a bus because it was jam-packed.
He said a meeting of the BZU transport committee was held a few days ago to discuss the issue. He said Students Affairs Director Dr Muhammad Farooq had pressed the need for purchase of new buses. The buses would have cost the university Rs10 million each. The transport committee instead decided to ply five of its old buses on new routes.
