Punjab University: Conference on Indo-Pak economic cooperation starts today

Prof Muhammad Kamran appointed head of PU Urdu Department.

LAHORE: Local and international experts will discuss the potential benefits of socio-economic cooperation between India and Pakistan at a three-day international conference starting here at the Punjab University (PU) on Monday.

Acting Governor Rana Muhammad Iqbal will be chief guest while PU Vice Chancellor Prof Mujahid Kamran will preside over the inaugural session starting at 9am at the Al Raazi Hall, Centre for Undergraduate Studies. The conference is organised by the Department of History and Pakistan Studies.

Prof Zhou Rong of Jiangsu Normal University, Xuzhou; Prof Dr Muhammad Waseem, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Lahore University of Management Sciences; and Prof Muhammad Iqbal Chawala, chairman of the PU Department of History, will be among the speakers.

New Urdu Dept head honoured

The Mavrah Cultural Forum Lahore organised a ceremony on Sunday to celebrate Prof Muhammad Kamran’s appointment as head of the PU Urdu Department.

Poet Khalid Sharif, who heads the forum, said that Prof Kamran was an accomplished critic, researcher, poet, educationist, travel correspondent and broadcaster and his appointment would be good for the Urdu language.

Poets Saeedul Zafar Siddiqui, Ahmed Subhani Aakash, Faisal Chishti, Samundar Mansoori, Muhammad Waseem and Irfan Sadiq congratulated Prof Kamran and praised his efforts for education.

Prof Kamran was also congratulated by Prof Khalil Tooqar, the head of the Urdu Department at Istanbul University; Prof Ibrahim El-Sayed, the head of the Urdu Department at Al-Azhar University; and Dr Ali Biyat, the head of Urdu Department at Tehran University.

Speaking after his appointment, Prof Kamran said that he would strive to promote research at the department.
