FAISALABAD:
“The Excise and Taxation Department (ETD) has launched a campaign against vehicle owners in Faisalabad who have not yet collected their registration plates,” ETD Spokesman Muhammad Waseem said on Saturday.
He said the ETD would send text messages on the mobile phones of vehicle owners to remind them to collect their plates by November 30. “Else, the plates will be confiscated and their vehicles will be impounded,” he said.
Thousands of vehicle owners in Faisalabad have not received registration plates from the Excise and Taxation Department (ETD) despite having deposited the registration fee years ago, The Express Tribune has learnt.
The ETD had asked vehicle owners in 2007-2008 to purchase registration plates approved by the department. In 2010, the department changed its policy and decided to issue the plates itself.
It charged Rs1,000 per car, Rs400 for a motorcycle and Rs1,000 for a commercial vehicle.
Use of plates prepared by other manufacturers was banned.
Muhammad Shafiq, a vehicle owner, told The Express Tribune that he had deposited the fee for his car’s registration plate five years ago but had not received it yet.
“Whenever I visit the office I am told to come back after two days… this goes on,” he said.
Ghulam Hussain, another vehicle owner, said, “I deposited the registration fee and other charges for my rickshaw’s registration three years ago.”
“I had to get in touch with a tout on Friday… he charged me Rs500 and handed the rickshaw’s plate the very next day,” he said.
ETD Motor Registration Branch Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO) Nauman Khalid denied that vehicle owners were paying bribes to get the plates.
“No one has complained about it to the department,” he added.
He said, “Many vehicle owners do not have their original computerized national identity cards and other documents needed to collect the plates.”
Excise and Taxation Department Spokesman Muhammad Waseem said a number of registration plates were lying at the department’s office.
“We have repeatedly asked the vehicle owners to come to the office and collect the plates but they have been ignoring the requests,” he said.
Waseem said, “9,000 registration plates lying at Faisalabad office, 320 at Jhang office, 252 at Toba Tek Singh office and 170 at Chiniot office…the vehicle owners need to collect them.”
