HYDERABAD:

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has announced that the plan to divide Hyderabad into two separate districts is no longer on the table.

Without elaborating on the contradicting views on this proposal between the old guards of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the new members, he put to rest all controversies at a press conference on Saturday.

“In 2003, Hyderabad was divided and three new districts were created from it. But its present state will not be changed,” he said while responding to a question. The PPP’s provincial minister from Hyderabad, Jam Khan Shoro, has been publicly lobbying for creating Qasimabad district from Hyderabad. Under his proposals, the two talukas with majority Sindhi population will be made part of the new district while the other two talukas, dominated by Urdu speaking people, will remain in Hyderabad.

Shah said that the Sindh Council meeting reviewed preparations for the December 27 death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto, adding that PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Co-Chairperson Asif Zardari will address the public meeting on the occasion.

The chief minister warned the Hyderabad DIG Naeem Akram Bharoka and SSP Fida Hussain Mastoi to control crime in Hyderabad division within two weeks, warning the two officials of action against them.

He said that the provincial government is fulfilling all the requirements of the police. Shah also expressed his displeasure over the infrastructure development in Hyderabad, saying Rs12 billion have been spent in last five years.
