A healthy diet and lifestyle changes can help prevent diabetes, said Dr Salman Faridi, the medical director of Liaquat National Medical College (LNMC). He was speaking at an awareness programme organised by LNMC in connection with International Diabetes Day on Wednesday.
The speakers expressed concern that over 7.1 million diabetes patients in Pakistan are over 20 years old. They observed that 53,000 women and 36,000 men die every year in the country due to diabetic complications. They said that out 10 Pakistanis, one is a diabetic.
The experts were of the view that if diabetes is not dealt with properly, diabetes patients world over would surge to 450 million by 2030. They expressed that diabetics can lead a normal life if they follow the instructions of their physician, adopt active lifestyle and take healthy diet. A free medical camp was also set up for diabetics. Hundreds of patients benefitted from the camp where free medical tests were conducted.
