“Eating less and walking more is the golden principle to prevent most diseases,” speakers at a seminar at the Multan Press Club said on Thursday.
Dr Waqas Imran of the Children Complex and Endocrinologist Dr Faisal Masood Qureshi were prominent among speakers.
They stressed the need for adopting a simple way of life by avoiding junk food.
Dr Qureshi said the Pakistan Endocrinology Society (PES) was holding a two-day endocrinology conference for first time in south Punjab to create awareness among doctors, physicals and pediatricians about diseases related to hormones.
He said by 2025, Pakistan would likely stand fifth in the list of countries with high rates of diabetes. He said that under the PES, many international and national speakers will present their papers during the conference, which will increase awareness among doctors.
He regretted that there was no endocrinology department in south Punjab, including at hospitals like Nishtar Medical Institute, the biggest public hospital in the region.
Dr Imran said the World Health Organisation in collaboration with Baqai Medical University would set up 2,400 clinics across Pakistan, where patients would be treated free-of-cost.
He advised diabetics to get tested for HBIC, a test conducted to know average sugar control, every three months.
He said the College of Physicals and Surgeons was offering a five-year programme to train doctors in endocrinology.
