Grim situation: Small-scale traders demand security

Small-scale traders have demanded the government to take adequate anti-riot steps to protect the markets.

KARACHI:
Small-scale traders have demanded the government to take adequate anti-riot steps to protect the markets, especially during processions and rallies. Mehmood Hamid, president of the All Pakistan Association of Small Traders and Cottage Industries Karachi, expressed concern on huge losses that were incurred during the recent riots and mayhem in Rawalpindi. He recalled the mayhem that was caused in 2010, which resulted in huge losses for the traders in Bolton market in Karachi, stressing that the government and its law enforcing agencies were yet to learn a lesson. He condemned the ransacking and burning of markets during rallies and processions, which has now become a routine matter in the country. Hamid also pointed out the losses incurred during the recent strike of the goods transporters and market closures during the 8th to 10th Muharram.
