Sindh wants LG polls deferred till end-March
Representatives of provincial govt will submit this proposal at meeting of ECP being convened today in Islamabad.
KARACHI:
The Sindh government has decided to recommend end-March as a suitable time for local government elections. Representatives of the provincial government will submit this proposal at a meeting of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) being convened today (Tuesday) in Islamabad.
“After the passage of the 18th Amendment, it is the provincial government’s prerogative to announce a convenient date for the election,” Advocate General Sindh Khalid Javeed Khan told The Express Tribune. “We cannot hold the polls in haste as proposed by the ECP, but suggest the end of March [as a suitable time],” he said.
The chief secretary, local government secretary and Sindh additional advocate general are expected to represent the provincial government on this request.
Khan said that all political parties have expressed their concern over the new election schedule, under which the polls are to be held on January 18. “Every party seeks more time for its campaign, therefore we have decided to extend the date,” he said.
