Muharram security: Cellular services restored in parts of Sindh, Punjab
Cellular services have been restored in Karachi, Faisalabad, Multan and Rawalpindi.
Mobile phone services have been restored in parts of Sindh and Punjab including Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi.
Mobile phone services were down for almost 15 hours.
Cellular services in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) are yet to be restored.
Earlier, mobile phone services were suspended in parts of Sindh, K-P and Punjab on Thursday for security reasons, Express News reported.
This security measure was taken to prevent any terrorist activities during Ashura.
Cellular services have also been suspended partly in Islamabad.
On Thursday, many people reported that they were not getting any cellular network service on their handsets.
Sindh
In Sindh, cellular services have been suspended in Karachi, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Larkana, Mirpur Khas and Sanghar.
On November 12, the Sindh government had requested the federal interior ministry to suspend mobile phone services in Sindh on Muharram 9 and 10.
To bolster security in the province, army have been deployed in Karachi on Muharram 9 and 10 on Sindh government’s request and they will be deployed in other parts of Sindh if need be, the Rangers spokesperson had announced.
Section 144 is already imposed in the city as the display of weapons is prohibited.
Earlier, Sindh government had imposed ban on pillion riding for Muharram 9 and 10.
Punjab
Mobile phone services have also been suspended throughout Multan, Pakpattan, Faisalabad, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Rahim Yar Khan, Chakwal, Muzaffargarh and Jhang, and in many areas of Lahore and Rawalpindi on Muharram 9.
In Punjab, police had earlier requested to mull the mobile phone services on Muharram 9 and 10.
Mobile jammers would be used to monitor the mourning processions on Muharram 8, Punjab police had previously said.
K-P
Cellular services are also suspended completely in Dera Ismail Khan, Hangu, Kohat, Bannu and Kurram Agency and partly in Peshawar, Haripur and Abbotabad.
Moreover, riding motorcycles is completely banned Dera Ismail Khan.
Pillion riding is banned throughout the country.
