As many as 219 gatherings and 331 processions will be held in Bahawalpur division on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. 12,500 policemen have been deployed across the division for security.


Sharing details of the security plan for the two days with The Express Tribune, Regional Police Officer Shahid Hanif said the plan would be strictly abided by throughout the three districts. He said the Punjab Highway Patrol officials had been connected with the Punjab Police for coordination on security updates. He said 1,260 Punjab Constabulary, Elite Force and Highway Patrol officials had been deployed as reserve.

The RPO said that 53 gatherings and 47 processions had been declared sensitive. He said additional security forces had been deployed in these areas.



Procession routes

Also on Wednesday, the Punjab Emergency Service divisional office issued the route plan for the two days processions in Bahawalpur.

Divisional Emergency Officer (Rescue 1122) Asif Rahim Channar told The Express Tribune that the route had been finalised after coordination with security and intelligence officials.


On the 9th, the mourning procession will leave from Shia Mosque and end at Shahdara Chowk after passing through the Zanana Hospital Road, the Phoolonwala Chowk, Kajalpura Colony and Kasur Colony.

On the 10th of Muharram, the mourning procession will start from Shia Mosque. It will pass through the Zanana Hospital Road, Machli Bazaar, Tibya College and Crafts Bazaar and culminate on Karbala Road.

Channar said fire trucks and ambulances had been made available along all routes on both days.

He said patrolling rescue officials will escort mourners in places where rescue vehicles could not enter.

Faisalabad security

Security at 172 sensitive points in Faisalabad has been beef up on account of the 9th and 10th of Muharram, Divisional Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Akram Javed said on Wednesday.  He said 1,502 processions would be taken out in the division. Over 4,000 gatherings will be held.

He said peace committees comprising ulema of various sects have been formed.

RPO Chaudhry Nawaz Warraich said 41 gazetted police officers, 153 inspectors, 526 sub inspectors, 918 ASIs, 1,126 head constables, 8,812 police cops, 2,166 police volunteers, 1080 special policemen and 4,565 male and 1200 female volunteers had been deputed for security.
