ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) submitted a request to the Supreme Court asking for an extension to the current election dates for upcoming Local Government (LG) elections, Express News reported on Monday.

The polls are scheduled for November 27 in Sindh, and December 7 in Punjab and Balochistan – these dates were provided as options to the ECP by the Supreme Court.

Earlier the ECP had asked Punjab’s provincial government to provide the body with all the required resources for making arrangement for the local government elections.

The ECP had made this demand in response to the provincial government’s refusal to make the arrangements itself as ordered by the commission on November 6. The Punjab government had refused to arrange the local body elections, saying it is the commission’s responsibility.

The ECP began printing nomination papers for the upcoming LG elections in Sindh and Punjab on November 9, but the papers did not make it to any of the offices in Karachi, Sukkur or Hyderabad on that date.

The submission of nomination papers for Balochistan’s LG elections concluded on November 9.

On November 6, the commission had issued the LG election schedule for Sindh and Punjab.
