Energy theft: Minister says ending power theft top priority

State Minister for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali said on Saturday that the government was dedicated to curbing electricity theft.
Addressing a press conference at WAPDA House, he said strict action would be taken against any official found involved.
He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was given weekly briefings in this regard.
He said the government had added 1,700 megawatts to the national grid and was working on several power projects including Satpara, Jamshoro and Guddu to cope with the electricity shortage.
He said that some power plants running on high speed diesel would soon be switched to coal to produce cheaper electricity.
To a question, he said that electricity worth Rs242 billion was being stolen annually.
Minister Abid Sher Ali said that fresh legislation was needed to stop
electricity theft.
