PESHAWAR:

Police and security forces conducted a joint operation in Paharipura and Faqirabad, arresting around 169 people Saturday morning.

The operation was conducted after Friday’s incident in which the bomb disposal squad defused a homemade explosive device in Momin Town. A letter from a militant outfit from Khyber Agency was found attached to the device; it warned a series of blasts will take place in the coming days.

“Around 70 people have been arrested from Momin Town, Shinwari Town and other parts under the Paharipura police station during the operation. The police carried out a door-to-door search operation and security forces cordoned off the entire locality,” a police official told The Express Tribune.

Another 99 people have been arrested from Afghan Colony and Amjad Town in the jurisdiction of Faqirabad police station in an operation which lasted for five hours, added the official.

“All those arrested have been shifted to nearby police stations where interrogation teams will investigate further.” Once the detainees have been cleared by the police, they will be released, assured the police officer.

“We recovered five AK-47s, three rifles, four shotguns and 300 cartridges.”

Meanwhile, the police raided two hotels in Sikandar Town and Paharipura. The mangers of these hotels were arrested on charges of providing lodging to Afghan refugees despite a ban on accommodating outsiders during Muharram.

“The managers have been booked and FIRs have been registered against them for violating the ban,” said the police official.

He explained a strict ban has been placed on all hotels which entails closing services for outsiders. The prohibition was predicated on reports that Musam Khan, suspected in the Qisa Khwani attack in September, had visited the city 10 days ahead to inspect
the site.
