Indian govt promises action against 'no Muslims' property ad
A Mumbai broker had posted an ad for the sale of a flat which says “No Muslims” live in the building.
MUMBAI:
An Indian state government’s minority commission has promised to take action against a discriminatory real estate advertisement targeting Muslims, IBN Live reported on Friday.
A Mumbai broker had posted an ad online for the sale of a flat - worth INR 3 crores - which says:
"There are several cases of discrimination against minorities in housing that have come before; we have taken action in the past for example against society registrars. We will speak with concerned authorities and take action," Maharashtra’s minorities commission chairperson Munaf Hakim said.
The national authorities are also examining the advert. "The ad I'm afraid to say is somewhat ridiculous - it talks about various facilities available in the apartment including no Muslims. How ridiculous and how absurd; it is highly offensive. Are Muslims part of the furniture, I mean what does he mean?" questioned National Minorities Commission Chairperson Wajahat Habibullah.

Legal action
A petition has been filed with the India’s National Commission for Minorities, seeking action against the broker and a portal which displayed the ad.
"I got a call from a representative of 99acres.com, pleading they can't be held responsible for the ads which are published on their site," Habibullah said.
"We are in the process of putting in place more rigorous checks and processes to prevent the recurrence of such listings. We are deeply embarrassed that our site was misused in this manner," the website owners said in a statement, as reported by NDTV.
