Margalla Towers’ victim: Payment of compensation ordered

SC has ordered payment of Rs13.69 million to affected woman.

ISLAMABAD:
The Supreme Court has ordered payment of Rs13.69 million to an affected woman of the Margalla Towers which were devastated in the 2005 earthquake. At the time, the woman, Nida Hussain, was a minor and thus not eligible for filing a damages claim but after eight years she wrote a letter to the chief justice. On Wednesday, a three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry gave the verdict on Hussain’s petition. The petitioner told the court that on October 8, 2005, her apartment was also damaged in the earthquake’s aftermath, resulting in the deaths of her family members. She is the only remaining heir to the property and thus liable to be paid compensation.
