LAHORE: The formation of district coordination committees and release of funds to them is the government’s prerogative and does not violate any law, the local government secretary told the Lahore High Court on Wednesday. Responding to a petition moved by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf challenging the formation of the committees, the secretary also denied that the Punjab government was playing favourites in the release of funds to the committees. He said that the government had no favourites. Justice Ijazul Ahsan postponed the hearing till November 8. Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed and other PTI MPAs said in the petition that the Punjab government had released billions of rupees to the district coordination committees for the purpose of influencing voters ahead of the local elections. They asked the court to declare the committees illegal.
