ABU DHABI: South Africa withdrew former captain and opener Graeme Smith from the remainder of the One-Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan, said an official yesterday.

Smith suffered a blow on the head off Pakistan paceman Mohammad Irfan’s bouncer in the second Test in Dubai last month. He managed to play the first two ODIs but was withdrawn before the third match played yesterday.

Team manager Mohammed Moosajee said Smith suffered post-concussion.

“Graeme was symptom free after the blow except for a mild headache,” said Moosajee. “However, during the second one-day he started complaining of blurred vision which progressed to dizziness and difficulty in focusing.”

“The MRI Scan was clear, however it is in keeping with the assessment of Post-Concussion Syndrome. Graeme has been advised a rest period of at least two weeks.”
