ISLAMABAD:

A baby that was allegedly abducted from the capital’s largest referral hospital last Friday was recovered from the banks of a stream in Naseerabad, Rawalpindi. The newborn boy was buried in his parent’s hometown, Lora, Abbottabad district, on Tuesday.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Naseerabad Police Station Head Constable Rana Mohammad Ramzan said on November 3 at around 1:15pm, Naseeb Gul, a labourer, saw a baby’s body lying in a stream near Mohalla Zimdaran.

He immediately called Rescue 1122 and later lodged a first information report stating he was fetching water when he saw the baby’s bare body with a drip still injected in his arm.

The body was later taken to District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ), where a postmortem and DNA test were conducted, Ramzan said.

On November 4, Saifur Rehman, the baby’s father, was informed that the Rawalpindi Police had recovered the body of a newborn baby and was asked to come to identify it.

Ramzan said there were no marks on the baby’s body, making it difficult to determine how he was killed.

“However, the insertion of the cannula can lead us to presume that the baby fell ill and the kidnappers unsuccessfully tried to keep him alive,” he said.

Ramzan said the postmortem report is due within a few days, after which the police will be in a position to determine the cause of death.

Rehman said he had no words to describe the pain he was suffering from while burying his baby boy. “We still have no clue as to who is behind this evil act. I did not even get a chance to hold him in my arms,” he said, while talking to The Express Tribune.

Rehman said that on November 4, at around 7pm, he got a call from Ghulam Habib, the investigating officer assigned to the case by the Margalla police, who told him the Naseerbad police had found a newborn’s body.

“He asked me to come to the DHQ mortuary to identify it. At that moment I was unsure whether I should be happy that my baby has been found or feel shattered that he is no longer with us,” he said.

While sharing details of the incident which took place on October 31, he said a lady who identified herself as Noshaba and said she was a resident of Karachi Company took his son out of the hospital’s ward when his wife Saira was being given an injection which made her unconscious. “Now all what we are left with is guilt and regret,” he said.

Habib said the Margalla police have arrested two employees of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and are investigating the incident.

“We have no clue about the culprits yet, is but we are doing everything we can to catch whoever committed this heinous crime,” he said.
